Peace Region

Dawson Creek BC is a small city of approximately 12,000 friendly people, located in the heart of the Peace Region in Northern BC, just ten minutes west of the Alberta border. Dawson Creek is known as MILE ZERO of the Alaska Highway, which runs directly through the city and offers access to destinations such as Fort St John, Grande Prairie and Prince George, not to mention Alaska!  Have your picture taken at the famous “Mile 0” post in downtown Dawson!

The city of Dawson Creek prides itself on sustainability and renewable energy. We are not only striving to be carbon neutral, but we were the first “Solar City” in Canada! Our residents never change their clocks!  Due to our geography, we experience the third highest daytime hours in Canada, so there is no need for daylight savings.  No More springing forward or falling back!

For the outdoor lovers, Dawson Creek is the jewel of the Peace Region!  You will be treated to northern lights, sprawling landscapes, and unspoiled wilderness in the foothills of the Northern Rockies. Winter adrenaline junkies will be delighted with one of the deepest snowpacks in Canada, Powder King Ski Resort truly is the Whisper of the North. Snowmobilers have multiple options whether it is travelling into the Pine Pass or heading out to Tumbler Ridge. Closer to home, the Bear Mountain Ski Hill and the fantastic Nordic Ski Trails which are only ten minutes away. Summer activities include river boating up the Murray River or Peace River, hiking through the Northern Rockies in Tumbler Ridge, mountain biking at Bear Mountain, or taking a walk along the many walking trails and parks within town. There are two golf courses: the Dawson Creek Golf and Country Club and Farmington Fairways, located 10 minutes north of the city. Dawson Creek also boasts the Kenn Borek Aquatic Center, a great facility for swimming, with a rock climbing wall, and walking track! Dawson also has fantastic soccer, baseball, volleyball, and hockey leagues for adults and kids!

Dawson Creek plays host to many different art and cultural events. The EnCana Events Centre is an arena and multi-event facility which offers many different sporting events such as hockey, curling, ice skating, as well as entertainment; concerts, bull riding and monster truck shows. Past featured artists include Kiss, Luke Bryan, ZZ Top, and Offspring. The EnCana Events Centre is part of the South Peace Community Multiplex, a multi-purpose facility whose focus is on both entertainment and sports – the largest such center in Northeastern BC and Northwestern Alberta, it attracts many of the biggest entertainment acts in Canada and the US. We are also lucky to have the Kiwanis Performing Arts Center which hosts jazz and tap dancing, ballet, karate, the Pottery guild, weaving and the Kiwanis Community Band!

Other amenities include: a movie theatre, skate park, bowling alley, gun range, the Dawson Creek Art Gallery, the Alaska Highway House, the Arc Christian Youth Center,  the Rolla Pub, the W.A.C. Bennet Dam,  the Walter Wright Pioneer Village and the Bear Mountain Wind Park. Annually, Dawson Creek hosts the Kiwanis trade show, the Gun and Sportsmans show, the Fall Fair, and the Sweetwater 905 music festival.

Are you a wildlife buff?  The Peace Region hosts a huge variety of wildlife, including bears, moose, coyotes, deer, fox, cougars, elk, buffalo, hawks, owls and eagles. Birding and hunting enthusiasts alike will not be disappointed. A History buff? The City of Dawson Creek has a vast history with many different settlement communities and culture. If you are interested in the geolocial history, travel to Tumbler Ridge, only an hour away. There you can visit the Dinosaur Museum which has interactive displays and tours.

Dawson Creek has four public elementary schools and one high school. There are three private Christian schools K-12. Northern Lights College offers training in a variety of trades: heavy duty mechanic, carpentry, plumbing, aircraft maintenance, and wind turbine maintenance…. just to name a few. If trades aren’t your fancy, they also offer a great arts program, academic transfer courses and cosmetology.
